hello
easy fix for the concern about interaction design being in the "wong" place:
swap it with usability engineering. Voila. Ahh. ;)

And don't worry about concerns of over simplifying. That's the point here. The map is not the territory, it's just a helper. The person holding the map interprets it as best they can, in context, suitable to their needs. right? :)

Interesting, I work as a one-man shop and I feel these roles shifting as I build websites.

Quite simplified diagram, but great for a conversation starter, i'm sure many individuals within an organisations are at least skilled if not actively tasked in more than one of these realms of UX. Also the information you are trying to display is 4D in that it can overlap but also appear in more than one location... sort of like folding space... or plasticine. As for the white in the middle surely that's the product and not any individual.

Just thoughts on the diagrams which had major flaws when looked from a self-employed perspective.

The illustration is great. I want to do something similar at our company with how our department works with the business/technology dept.

My concern other than the Interaction Design not in the design circle is that isn't communication a key for all stakeholders. Why is it left outside of the Technology circle?

My opinion is that communication is essential, moreso for designer and the tech group because as a UI designer, I am constantly in battle with our technical developers to use the latest technology out there.

Lack of communication makes it that much harder to co-work when our design is merely just a design, but without the technology, and the technical skills, it will never reach to the mass.

The graphics are really nice, the article was a bit to simplified for my liking but it gets the point across.

This article is of explosive interest and therefore crucial for business processes. In theory, like your model, it looks and sounds quiet often convincing and easy. In reality each process works differently because of people with diverse backgrounds, characters, ambitions and ideas. So these kind of models are per se imcomplete and will provide vague ideas of ideal working processes. Furthermore i think the models themselves are to static. For instance i miss the overlap of 'Product' and 'Interface'. Or the terms 'Simplicity' and 'Consistency' are relative; they represent to me values like Swissness. But what i miss in the end is a third model. What counts finally and is the wholy cow in this whole thing is the user himself and his experience with the brand. So why not taking this and implementing a third model and reworking after this the first two? I am sure the first two models would look very different after this. And by the way, Tobias, Apple Chief Designer Jonathan Ive was honored by the Queen with 'Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire'?! Designers are strongly needed in this visual world, as thinkers too!

Mmm... love the artwork.
I think the model though is how IA's would like to see the world.
As a product designer, i think the model is limited. Product design, is simply design.
Better to separate architecture/manufacturing-line from consumer facing product.

Great educational article.

Wondering if it couldn't benefit from a more relevant title though ;-)
